In the need for a little inspiration this week? We’ve compiled a handful of our favourite quotes from fellow entrepreneurs to help sky-rocket your business to success this year.
2016 done. Blue Monday over. Now is the time for a little positive attitude. In light of this, I thought a few insightful and inspirational quotes from a range of successful entrepreneurs is the ideal place to start.
After all, there’s something magical about quotes. As human beings, reading words from an entrepreneur who is basking in the fruits of their labour is strangely thought-provoking. Each word rouses a thirst within us and reassures us that we too can achieve our goals.
So, here goes. Read away, share to your hearts content, and make 2017 a year to remember.
“Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.”
Sir Richard Branson – founder of the Virgin Group
Mr. Branson has suffered his fair share of failures. At the age of 16, he dropped out of school to start a magazine called Student. It was a flop. But just like his quote states, another bus came along. Branson started a record mail-order business that he advertised in the magazine. It proved so popular, that he ditched the magazine and opened his own record shop called Virgin.
“It’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen.”
Scott Belsky – co-creator of Behance Ltd.
Scott Belsky created Behance, a New York based company that provides services seeking to organise the creative world and make ideas happen. Just like his quote, Belsky was frustrated with all of the people who have an idea but never explore it further or allow it to go stagnant. He went out and executed his vision from start to finish, and recently sold it to Adobe for $150 million.
“You need a stubborn belief in an idea in order to see it realised.”
James Dyson – founder of Dyson
This quote is no truer than with the founder of Dyson vacuum cleaners, James Dyson. Giving up simply wasn’t in his nature, as he watched 5127 of his prototypes fail before his great breakthrough. He’s now worth over $3 billion and is part of the furniture in millions of homes (literally)!
“Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.”
Bill Gates – co-founder of Microsoft
Shortly after releasing the Xbox 360, millions of unhappy gamers were getting the “Red Ring of Death”. The system’s flaws forced Microsoft to repair and replace systems, and led to an extension of the console’s warranty to account for the issues. Gates learnt from his failures and unhappy customers, and as a result, dramatically improved the new generation console, the Xbox One.
“All successful businesses should talk to their customers like friends, and all friends text.”
Alastair Shortland – founder of Textlocal
No list of quotes would have been complete without our very own founder of Textlocal, Alastair Shortland. This quote highlights the importance for businesses to speak to their customers like human beings. Communications and marketing should feel real, sincere, and honest. It’s this kind of philosophy that has garnered Shortland numerous awards and over 165,000 customers since he started Textlocal 11 years ago.
“I’m as proud of many of the things we haven’t done as the things we have done. Innovation is saying no to a thousand things.”
Steve Jobs – co-founder of Apple
In the development stages of the first ‘iPod phone’, Steve Jobs was adamant on having a click wheel keypad. The engineers tried for 10 weeks before giving up. This idea fuelled his concept to include a virtual keyboard on the phone, thus making it touch screen. This quote proves that all entrepreneurs have to appreciate the bad ideas, as it usually leads to a better and more innovative one down the line.
“Listen to your instincts and ignore everything else. Ignore logic, ignore the odds, ignore the complications, and just go for it.”
Judith McNaught – bestselling author
Judith McNaught had many jobs before becoming a bestselling author with A Kingdom of Dreams. For years, she repeatedly listened to her logic and ignored her true talents as a writer. But with a little persuasion from her husband and the persistence to continue after having her novels continually rejected by publishers, she finally got her break.
“The secret to successful hiring is this: look for the people who want to change the world.”
Marc Benioff – CEO of Salesforce
Marc Benioff has actively looked to change the world himself, having spent $3 million in 2015 to equalise compensation across Salesforce, closing the tech giant’s gender pay gap. This quote is so relevant for entrepreneurs and CEOs today. Find likeminded people who want to make a difference, and remember to practice what you preach.
“Entrepreneurship is neither a science nor an art. It is a practice.”
Peter Drucker – management consultant, educator, and author
Peter Drucker found very few opportunities for employment after the Great War. He moved country and changed jobs numerous times, practicing, and fine tuning his works on the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation. This quote echoes his life. His success wasn’t down to his creative talents or knowledge, it was through his willingness to be adaptable and keep trying new things.
There you have it, I hope you’re feeling a little more inspired about your business for the year ahead. And if you’re going to take anything from this post, remember what you do today, can improve all tomorrows.
