Apple reached a milestone this week, with the sale of its 500 millionth smartphone.
The firm sold the impressive sum of the devices over its eight years in the market, according to dailystar.co.uk. However, Apple still falls behind Android when it comes to the number of smartphones sold.
Figures show that in excess of one billion Android devices were sold in 2013. Samsung was by far the most popular manufacturer for customers using the platform, with 314 million of the one billion sold produced by the firm. Predictions from US advisory firm Gartner also show that the Android market is set to stay strong this year.
Insider claims that Apple bosses aren’t worried about lagging behind Android, however and are just concentrating on value, rather than sales volumes. If the firm was worried about sales, its ‘low-cost’ smartphone, the iPhone 5c, would have been priced much lower, experts suggest.
Apple only sold 1.4 million of its iPhones in the first year of operation. This increased to 12 million in 2008, 20 million in 2009 and over 35 million in 2010. It is also reported by digitalversus.com that the firm managed to sell 51 million of its smartphone devices in the fourth quarter of 2013 alone.
